Manifesto

This manifesto outlines our ambitious plan to revolutionize the exchange of knowledge and learning for the future.

Introduction

At the heart of iLiBRi lies a vision to cultivate a seamless integrative ecosystem of knowledge that transcends traditional boundaries of knowledge management, learning, communication, and education. We are dedicated to creating a platform where knowledge is consumed, leading to genuine learning and growth. This document declares our commitment to enhancing and sustaining the quality of life through knowledge.

Knowledge:

  1. Fragmentation: Once revered as the cornerstone of progress, knowledge is now scattered and fragmented across disparate platforms and domains. This fragmentation impedes collaboration, innovation, and holistic understanding.
    • Fragmentation and Silos: Information and knowledge are often scattered across different departments, teams, and systems within organizations, leading to duplication of efforts, inefficiencies, and lack of collaboration.
  2. Language Domination: Language is both a bridge and a barrier to knowledge. However, the dominance of specific languages accelerates the segregation of knowledge domains, perpetuating linguistic inequalities and limiting cross-cultural exchange.
  3. Tacit Knowledge Preservation: Organizations often fail to capture and transfer tacit knowledge—the expertise, insights, and experiences that reside within individuals’ minds. Without appropriate tools and habits for knowledge sharing and documentation, tacit knowledge remains vulnerable to loss.
  4. Knowledge Loss: Organizations risk knowledge loss due to employee turnover, retirement, or lack of proper documentation and transfer mechanisms, a largely unexplored area in strategic management. This loss of institutional knowledge can hinder innovation, decision-making, and organizational effectiveness.
  5. Ineffective Knowledge Transfer: Even with knowledge transfer mechanisms, such as mentoring programs or knowledge repositories, the absence of appropriate tools, empirical studies, and habits can result in ineffective knowledge transfer processes. This leads to gaps in understanding and utilization of critical information within organizations.
  6. Knowledge Hoarding: In environments where knowledge sharing is not incentivized or encouraged, individuals may hoard information for fear of losing their perceived value or competitive advantage. This hoarding behavior further exacerbates knowledge loss and hampers organizational learning and growth.

Learning:

  1. Beyond Access: Access to knowledge is not an end but a means to empower individuals to learn, grow, and thrive. Merely accessing information is insufficient; meaningful learning requires comprehension, application, and retention.
  2. The Pitfall of Instant Answers: While AI-driven solutions like ChatGPT and Perplexity AI offer instant answers, the fleeting nature of this information undermines long-term retention and understanding. We must prioritize profound learning experiences over quick fixes. We believe that the art of formulating good questions is far more important than the answers.
  3. Navigating the Information Maze: Discerning between credible knowledge and misinformation is essential in an age of information overload. However, the proliferation of polluted information sources challenges our ability to navigate this maze confidently and clearly. “Misinformation undermines this process. The repercussions are extensive. Without reliable and accurate sources of information, we cannot hope to halt climate change, make reasoned democratic decisions, or control a global pandemic“.

Education:

  1. Relevance and Resilience: Traditional education systems are struggling to keep pace with the demands of the modern world. They risk becoming obsolete due to rapid technological advancements and evolving societal needs.
  2. Embracing Change: Educational institutions must shed their resistance to change and adopt innovative methodologies and technologies. The inertia of tradition stifles progress and deprives learners of transformative learning experiences.
  3. Redefining Credentials: Credentials, once regarded as indicators of knowledge and expertise, are no longer sufficient in today’s dynamic landscape. We need a paradigm shift towards holistic assessments that capture the depth and breadth of an individual’s knowledge and skills.
  4. Teacher-Centric Paradigm: In some educational environments, the teacher-centric paradigm prevails, focusing primarily on content delivery rather than facilitating student-centered learning experiences. This limits opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning journey and pursue areas of interest through inquiry-based approaches.
  5. One-Size-Fits-All Approach: Traditional education systems often adopt a one-size-fits-all approach, where learning experiences and content are standardized and not tailored to individual needs, interests, or learning styles. This lack of personalization can lead to disengagement and limited student motivation.

Core Values

Fluidity and Integration

We believe in the fluidity of knowledge and its power to integrate into the fabric of everyday life.

We strive to make knowledge acquisition a natural, intuitive process where each piece of information seamlessly contributes to a user’s personal and professional development. We do not stop there; what matters the most is what happens after the proper knowledge is acquired. We are focusing on the internalization, management, incorporation, synthesis, and utilization of knowledge (the complete knowledge cycle) individually and collaboratively.

Traceability and Impact

Knowledge’s impact is magnified when its origins and journey are clear. We ensure that every piece of knowledge on iLiBRi is traceable and reviewable, fostering trust and credibility.

Every written piece is a fusion of our thoughts and what we have acquired through personal experiences, learning from others, or life events. Therefore, it is crucial to clarify the sources, relationships, interconnections, and position of every piece of knowledge within the realm of knowledge. This process is imperative and one of the significant factors that determines the quality of each knowledge unit.

This traceability is critical in building a knowledge hub that users can rely on for accurate, impactful information.

Flexibility and Education

Our platform embodies the flexibility required for alternative, high-quality education. We recognize that

iLiBRi is designed to achieve that, offering diverse learning methods that cater to each individual’s unique needs utilizing an innovative design powered by GenAI.

Philosophical and Theoretical Underpinnings

Connectivism and Lifelong Learning

iLiBRi is grounded in the principles of connectivism and lifelong learning. We believe

Our platform encourages critical thinking and continuous learning, preparing users for the challenges of the digital age.

Inclusivity and Integration

Promoting digital literacy and inclusivity is fundamental to our mission. Inclusivity can not be achieved without a safe space where people from different backgrounds and speaking different languages can not bridge their knowledge. Therefore, our focus is on the most essential medium here (language inclusivity) as the gateway to having an inclusive community of philomaths.

iLiBRi fosters an environment where debate and collaboration thrive, ensuring all users can contribute and benefit regardless of their background and the language they interact with.

Cognitive Load Theory and the Challenge of Information Overload

In the digital age, the ubiquity of social media and the rapid dissemination of information has led to a phenomenon commonly referred to as information overload. At iLiBRi, we contend that the popular narrative surrounding the short attention spans of social media users is a symptom rather than the root cause of a deeper issue. The true challenge lies in the sheer volume of unprocessed information bombarding users daily, which overwhelms their cognitive capacities and hinders meaningful engagement with content.

Cognitive Load Theory as a Solution

Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) provides a framework for understanding how information is processed and retained by the human mind. It posits that our working memory has limited capacity, which can impair learning and comprehension when overloaded. By applying CLT and the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML), we can design knowledge delivery systems that align with the human cognitive architecture, thereby reducing extraneous cognitive load and facilitating the integration of new information.

Addressing Contextual Understanding

The challenge extends beyond managing cognitive load; it encompasses the need for contextual understanding. Information is not created equal, and without context, its value diminishes. We believe providing knowledge in a user-friendly platform is only part of the solution. The other part is ensuring that users can grasp the context of the information they encounter, enabling them to critically assess its relevance and accuracy.

Our Practical Solution

iLiBRi offers a practical solution to the problem of information overload. We are developing a platform that respects the cognitive limits of our users and empowers them to navigate the vast seas of information with confidence and clarity thanks to the latest advancements of GenAI and NLP, which enable us to design highly effective personalization processes. Our approach is twofold: enhancing digital literacy and creating an intuitive design accessible to users of all backgrounds and abilities.

Digital Literacy and Intuitive Design

We are committed to aiding in the development of digital literacy while simultaneously crafting a design that is both intuitive and habitual. “The great aim of education is not knowledge but action,” Herbert Spencer famously stated. We aim to translate this principle into the digital realm, providing users with the tools and knowledge necessary to take informed action in their lives.

A Call to Action

iLiBRi is a movement. We invite you to join the movement in building a knowledge ecosystem that starts with the potential of a single drop and expands to the vastness of an ocean. We can create a future where knowledge leads to learning, learning leads to action, and a better world for our children, families, and global community.
